Community Day Care
George Jeffrey/Sherbrooke Community Day Care is part of the Northwood Best Start Hub, located in Sherbrooke School. We offer licensed full and part-time daycare for children aged 18 months to 5 years. We also offer programming for school-aged children, 6 to 12 years. Our staff of Resource Teachers and Early Childhood Educators encourage children to learn through spontaneous play to help them develop physically, socially, and emotionally. Spontaneous play allows children to explore their thoughts and feelings about themselves as people and learners. It also offers the opportunity to participate in social situations, exercise self-control, and interact with others. As children socialize, their vocabularies increase and their facility with language develops. As part of the Best Start Hub there are a variety of programs families can access during the day as well as on evenings and weekends.
Our Resource Teachers are trained to conduct Fair Start screening for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years of age. Through the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, the Day Care is part of the Preventative Dentistry Program. We support our City's high schools by offering placements for co-op students wishing to prepare for a career in childcare. We also promote the Early Childhood Education program at Confederation College by offering field practicum for 1st and 2nd year students.
Our Day Care operates from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. The program observes statutory holidays. Children with special needs attend both part-time and full-time. They are integrated in regular Day Care activities with the assistance of our Resource Teachers. They may also receive therapy while attending the Day Care. Subsidized spaces are available. We are licensed under the Ministry of Education, Early Years Division.
