Recreation therapy fosters children's ability to function independently and increases their enjoyment of leisure activities by promoting their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Our recreation therapist provides individual and group activities, social interaction, and therapeutic skill development to eliminate barriers to leisure, develop life-long leisure skills and attitudes, and optimize leisure involvement for children aged 0 to 21 years already on the Centre's caseload.
These goals are achieved by using three modes of service based on an assessment of each child's strengths and needs: functional intervention, leisure education, and recreation participation. Functional intervention improves a child's specific functional behaviours or abilities that are necessary prior to independent leisure involvement. Leisure education allows children and their family to acquire leisure-related knowledge, skills attitudes, and resources. Recreation participation offers children voluntary opportunities to become involved in both specialized and inclusive recreation interests and activities. Group activities provided by this program include swimming, tai kwon do, kayaking, therapeutic gardening, and arts and crafts.
